The 2015 Alberta Neuroscience Symposium in Calgary will be a 3 day, 2 Symposia event at MacEwan Hall, University of Calgary from October 28-30, 2015. Terezia Farkas will be attending as a Director of the LE National Executive of CDRIN.
So what is the symposium about? Besides the updates and research data on neuroscience, it's also about people with Lived Experience making a dent with researchers. Sadly, there's been pushback from certain researchers about having people with lived experience on their research committees. One would hope researchers would be happy to have someone with lived experience on the team.
LE people have lots to offer. Their experience with depression make them great advisors on whether the research is targeting something of value to the ordinary person suffering from depression. A great example of LE reps and researchers working together is the BC Depression REACH HUB. The BC Depression REACH HUB has deliberately worked to ensure that LE reps are active participants in their research. So much so that the HUB and its members have been celebrated for excellence and innovation.
While the LE National Executive Committee of CDRIN pushes for more inclusion of LE reps in research, the decision ultimately rests with researchers and universities. It's time to shake things up in research. Researchers need to start thinking of people suffering from depression as co-partners in research instead of only being experimental subjects.
